内容简介/ Abstract:

 We study the impact of demand shocks on product quality in the hospital sector. Exploiting staggered Paid Sick Leave (PSL) mandates as exogenous positive shocks to healthcare demand, we find significant improvements in hospital healthcare quality in mandate regions, reflected in lower mortality rates, better patient ratings, and more timely care. Further analysis shows that demand shocks enhance hospitals' financial conditions, reduce borrowing costs, and increase investment and employment. Quality improvements are more pronounced among hospitals with tighter financial constraints and stronger governance. Hospital closure risk also declines. Overall, demand shocks generate financial benefits for hospitals and broader welfare gains.

主讲人介绍/Biography of the speaker：

曹杰教授现任香港理工大学会计与金融学院正教授、博士生导师。他亦担任香港证监会学术评审咨询委员会委员、香港金融管理局金融研究院咨询委员，联合国可持续证券交易所倡议组织学术委员、以及芝加哥数量联盟（亚洲）协会理事。在加入香港理工大学之前, 曹杰教授曾执教于香港中文大学商学院并获得终身教职。曹杰教授于2002年获得北京大学经济学学士学位、并于2009年在美国德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校获得金融学博士学位。他的研究领域为实证资产定价、金融衍生品、以及可持续金融等。他的研究成果见诸于Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Management Science 等顶级金融学及管理学期刊。他多次获得香港研究局的项目资助，并获得瑞士日内瓦财富研究院、加拿大衍生品研究院等多个海外科研机构的研究支持。

曹杰教授目前担任国际知名金融期刊 International Review of Finance 的共同主编以及国际权威金融期刊 Financial Management 的副主编。他亦担任CFA创办的金融业界国际权威期刊 Financial Analysts Journal 及知国际名会计期刊 China Accounting and Finance Review 的编委会成员。他承担多种国际一流期刊的评审工作。并担任香港研究局及加拿大社会科学和人文科学研究理事会的外部评审专家。
