Exchange Student Series | Discovering Wuyuan: A Delightful Journey through the Millennial Porcelain Capital
Date: 2024-10-15

I Background

This year, Shenzhen Audencia Financial Technology Institute (SAFTI) welcomed 37 international exchange students from all over the world, who are now part of our academic community. To promote cultural exchange and help these international students gain a deeper understanding of China, as well as to immerse them in the country's traditional culture and lifestyle, we arranged a special cultural research activity coinciding with the National Day celebrations. Led by teachers, 22 students from 11 countries including China, France, Argentina, Colombia and seven other countries embarked on a study journey to Jingdezhen, Wuyuan and other places in Jiangxi Province.

II Schedule

(i) Ceramic Art Avenue

On the afternoon of October 4, the group reached Jingdezhen, and headed to Ceramic Art Avenue for a visit. This place gathers more than 100 artists and craftsmen from all over the world, showcasing their unique original ceramic works. The students immersed themselves in the perfect combination of traditional pottery and modern creativity, interacted with the artists, and developed a strong interest in ceramic art.

(ii) Taoyangli Scenic Area

Following a night of rest, on the early morning of October 5, the group arrived at Taoyangli Scenic Area with renewed energy. This area was once the core area of the porcelain industry in history, offering a journey back to the ancient past. Wandering through the old town's lanes, they found paths lined with kiln bricks, stone carvings that exude an antique charm, and weathered kiln houses, each brick and tile whispering tales of bygone years.

Upon entering Imperial Kiln Factory National Archaeological Park, the profound sense of history enveloped visitors. The students delved into the rich history and culture of the imperial kilns and marveled at the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient ceramic production.

The Imperial Kiln Museum further expanded their horizons; its extensive collection, spanning from ancient to modern times and encompassing both traditional and innovative pieces, illustrated the evolution of Jingdezhen's ceramic industry, deepening the students' comprehension and reverence for this distinctive cultural legacy.

(iii) Traditional Ceramic Craft Experience at Taogongshu

At Taogongshu, the students ventured into the realm of traditional porcelain making. Under the guidance of a professional instructor, they had the opportunity to personally engage with this millennia-old Chinese craft.

The instructor skillfully operate the wheel, with a gentle touch and press of both hands, the clay gradually took shape. Everyone was amazed by this process. However, when it was their turn to give it a try, they realized that this was not as easy as it seemed. Some students initially struggled to control the force, causing the clay to become lopsided or even fly off the wheel. But no one gave up. After numerous attempts, they finally managed to complete the throwing process.

Wheel throwing was just the first step; further steps such as trimming and decorating came next. During the trimming process, students used tools to meticulously carve away excess clay from the piece, striving to make the work smoother and more rounded. The painting phase was even more creative; students delicately outlined contours or boldly splashed colors. Each brushstroke and line reflected their dedication and emotion, infusing their creations with personal visions and aesthetic aspirations.

This traditional ceramic-making experience allowed the students to deeply appreciate both the challenges and joys of pottery. The pieces they created by hand are not just objects; they embody their understanding and insights into Chinese traditional culture.

(iv) Huangling Scenic Area

On October 6, the group left Jingdezhen and ventured to Huangling Ancient Town in Wuyuan. The town is characterized by its Hui-style shops and the traditional layout of stores at the front and workshops at the back, resembling a living version of the "Along the River during the Qingming Festival" painting. Under the warm autumn sun, both drying and admiring the autumn harvest took place simultaneously. The colorful crops in the drying trays reflected against nature, adding vibrant hues to the mountainous autumn scenery.

Huangling Ancient Village has no flat land within a three-foot radius, making the rooftops the main venue for drying crops. Every household in the village sets up drying racks on their roofs, creating a unique scene that allowed the students to appreciate the wisdom and diligence of the working people.

(v) Wunvzhou Resort

As night fell, Wunvzhou presented another enchanting scene. The students strolled through the ancient town together in the evening light, admiring the beautiful nighttime views. The architecture here was antique and quaint, with dazzling lights that made one feel as if they were in a dream.

After strolling around, the students watched the large-scale live stage drama "Encounter Wuyuan" together. This performance is based on the legend of "Wuyuan Maiden Flying to Heaven," using modern lighting and projection technology in conjunction with real scenery to depict a magnificent and grand tapestry. The show ingeniously integrates light, fountains, fireworks, music, and actor interactions, providing the students with a dual shock to both sight and hearing.
